Chinmaya Mission
Trinidad & Tobago
- Swami Chinmayananda
History
Chinmaya Mission of Trinidad & Tobago was inaugurated on the auspicious day of Gandhi Jayanti, 2nd October 1997.
A small temple under Swami Prakashananda's parents' home in California (where Sunday Satsangs and other activities are still held), served as the Chinmaya Mission's base from 1997 to 2002. Swami Prakashananda, then Brahmachari Prem Chaitanya, traversed Trinidad, the Caribbean, the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom conducting Yagnas. Through his tireless efforts, and with the contributions of the community, the Chinmaya Mission grew tremendously from inauguration to present.
In 1999, Chinmaya Mission acquired more than two and a half acres of land situated at Calcutta Road #1, McBean, Couva. Construction of the Ashram buildings began in January 2001.
The first phase of construction of the Chinmaya Ashram at #1 Swami Chinmayananda Drive, Calcutta #1, McBean Village, included the Vidya Mandir, a students' hostel and guest residence called Gargi Bhavan, and the Acharya's kutir. The Ashram was inaugurated by Swami Tejomayananda in 2002.In 2004, a dining area was constructed. Further construction, including a boys' hostel, is due to begin in 2005.
Born out of the Chinmaya Mission's commitment to education and excellence is also the Chinmaya Vidyalaya High School, a private secondary school which opened in September 2003. In September 2005, the Chinmaya Mission will be opening another private secondary school as well as a pre-school in Gasparillo, Trinidad, on lands donated to the Ashram. Another pre-school will also operate at the Ashram in McBean.
