CHINMAYA MISSION TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO INC.
Swami Sivananda, once eloquently illustrated an old saying which stated “that while sacred shrines and Tirthas purify and sanctify all mankind, the sacred places and Tirthas are themselves more sanctified and divinised by the holy men and saints who grace them with their passing footprints or prolonged presence.
”May 10th, 1965 marked the first time Pujya Gurudev, Swami Chinmayananda, placed his holy feet upon the soils of Trinidad and Tobago. A large crowd comprising both local Indians and non-Indians ushered in his three day visit with a heartfelt welcome at the Piarco International Airport. During his visit, which was largely orchestrated by the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha organization, he observed that “There were no frontiers for Spiritual India.”
An indelible impression was engraved upon the hearts and minds of people in Trinidad, such that in 1966, when they learnt that his scheduled visit to Honolulu was cancelled, they eagerly invited Swami Chinmayananda to grace the “Geeta Talk Fest” with his presence. Swami Chinmayananda conducted a Geeta Gyan Yagna at Skinner’s Park, San Fernando from November 9th to November 21st. He also included in his yagna, lectures on the Bhaja Govindam and the Kenopanishad. Additionally, he inaugurated a Divine Life Society temple and was invited to give talks to Muslims in a mosque as well as forty trainees at the Monastery of Mount St. Benedict where locals were being trained as missionaries.
